How to get around
Patzcuaro - Communal vans
and buses ply between town, the railway station and the ferry landing. And taxis
are widely available. Most of Patzcuaro is accessible by foot, however, and even
the 3-km (2-mile) walk to the lake is pleasant if you´re reasonably fit.
The most flexible way to see the surrounding area is by renting a car.
But riding the frequent, local buses connecting Patzcuaro, Morelia and the
surrounding villages gives you a deeper appreciation of day-to-day life
here.
When traveling by air :
You can fly into it from the U.S. and other points in Mexico including Mexico
City, Guadalajara and Leon on Mexicana, Aeromexico, Aeromar and other airlines.
The closest airports in the area are the Morelia International airport (MLM)
located about 28 miles (45 km) southwest of Patzcuaro in Morelia, Mexico, the
Uruapan airport (UPN) located approximately 30 miles (48 km) west of Patzcuaro
in Uruapan, Mexico, and finally the Apatzingan airport (AZG) located roughly 58
miles (93 km) southwest of Patzcuaro in Apatzingan, Mexico.

By car recommended from
Mexico City - " Autopista Siglo XXI" (90% of the total
distance is toll-way); total traveling time is very similar for both highways
(about 8 hours). Click on map to enlarge There is a first-class,
direct bus from Mexico City´s western bus terminus to Patzcuaro. Buses to Morelia and Patzcuaro leave from the
"Central de Autobuses de Observatorio" in the west of Mexico City. Buses to
Morelia are very frequent. If you want to sleep on the bus the LOC recommends
the ETN coach service,
which has fully reclinable seats. The ticket desks for buses that go to Morelia
and Patzcuaro are at the far left of the bus terminal building. You must buy
your tickets here to obtain access to the departure areas. ETN has its own
waiting room for passengers with tickets. There is no need to obtain a ticket in
advance, although it is possible that due to demand you will not be able to get
a ticket for the first scheduled bus. Buses that travel through to Patzcuaro are
much less frequent. Please consult the "transport" section of the conference web
page for current bus schedules and prices. |
